Real Betis Balompié, commonly known as Real Betis or simply Betis, is a Spanish football club based in Seville. The club was founded in 1907, and has had a history of many relegations. It has played 25 seasons in the Segunda División and 51 seasons in La Liga. Due to the many relegations, the clubs motto is: ¡Viva el Betis aunque pierda! (Long live Betis even when they lose!).
The last time Real Betis were relegated was during the 1999-2000 season. They promoted back the next season, and have been playing in La Liga ever since. The last four seasons the club has ended 10th, 15th, 6th and 10th place. They are a stable club in the mid-table position of the Primera División and are trying hard to finish even higher. Maybe they will manage next season, with several new players such as Giovani Lo Celso and Nabil Fekir.
The club from Seville has a long-standing rivalry with city neighbour Sevilla FC. They have beaten Sevilla 28 times; Sevilla have beaten Betis 38 times. The match played between the two clubs from Seville is referred to as El derbi Sevillano.
Real Betis have played their home matches at the Estadio Benito Villamarín since 1929. The stadium has been renovated and expanded three times and it has a current capacity of almost 61,000, which makes it the fourth largest stadium in Spain.
