The Olympic stadium was built in 1929, originally to host the 1929 International Exposition in the city (and Barcelona's failed bid for the 1936 Summer Olympics, which were awarded to Berlin. The stadium was called Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc until 2001. It was named after the mountain on which the stadium is located. The Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys was put to use for the 1992 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It was fully renovated before the games took place.

The other football club of Barcelona, Espanyol, has been playing at the Olympic stadium from 1997 until 2010. It is now predominantly used for sport events, concerts and the stadium will become the temporary home of FC Barcelona.

FC Barcelona will temporarily play its home games at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys from the season of 2023/24. The reason for this is that Spotify Camp Nou is currently being renovated. This means that you can’t do a stadium tour or visit the club’s museum either. Despite of FC Barcelona switching stadiums, the club is looking forward to playing at the stadium on the Montjuïc mountain. The club has become unstoppable after winning the championship in the season of 2022/23 and they’re convinced that the fantastic ambience will be transferred to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
