Turf Moor's history

Burnley FC have been playing at Turf Moor since 1883, which makes it the second longest used stadium in English football. The stadium was first used for another sports activity for 40 years: cricket. Turf Moor was shared by the football club and the cricket association after 1883, but the cricket association wasn’t particularly happy with the fact they had to share the stadium now. They complained a lot about the footballers because they didn’t clean up after themselves after using the dressing rooms and the players refused to pay for the restoration of the dressing rooms. However, the stadium has been expanded and renovated several times through the years, and the Burnley football players did help with those constructions. Today, the stadium is only put to use for football.

Turf Moor is located in Burnley’s city centre. The walk from the city’s centre to the stadium only lasts 10 minutes, so it might be clever to travel to the stadium by foot. You could also make use of public transportation. Bus 2 departs from Burnley Bus Station and you should hop off at Blakey Street. Bus 591 departs from Burnley Bus Station, as well, and this bus brings you directly to Turf Moor. Both options take shorter than five minutes, so it’s not a long journey to travel from the city’s centre to the stadium.
