A new football season is upon us

Chelsea defeated Villareal and won the Super Cup, after an exhilarating series of penalties. FC Barcelona defeated Juventus last weekend with 3-0 at Camp Nou, which meant the Spanish club won the Joan Gamper Cup. AFC Ajax lost tremendously from PSV during a home game with 0-4 while battling for the Johan Cruijff Shield, also referred to as The Dutch Super Cup. The first couple of matches for prizes have been played, which means that the start of a new football season is upon us!

Premier League

The Premier League season will start again tomorrow evening. The first match will be played between Arsenal and newly promoted Brentford FC at 9 P.M. Another top match will be played during the Premier League weekend: Tottenham Hotspur will compete against Manchester City in a sold-out (!) Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at 5.30 P.M.

La Liga

La Liga: the competition that will never be the same again now Lionel Messi is gone. The footballers don’t have much time to get used to this idea because La Liga will also start this weekend. Getafe will face Valencia tomorrow night at the Estadio Mestalla and the match will start at 9 P.M. FC Barcelona doesn't have much time to prepare themselves because they’ll play against Real Sociedad on Sunday at 8 P.M. without Messi.

40% of the stadiums’ capacities can be used in Spain. The 1,5-metre rule is still in place and masks are also still mandatory to wear.

Bundesliga

The season will instantly start off with a top match between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich. The Borussia Park, that normally allows 46.000 supporters in, only allows half of the capacity in at the moment. The Bundesliga is usually known for its convivial supporters. Despite of the supporters’ return, the amazing atmosphere in German stadiums will return when the stadiums are fully utilized.

Serie A

Supporters – and footballers – have to wait a little longer before they can visit and play matches again. The Serie A will start on Saturday, August 21. The first match will be played against Internazionale and Genoa at the San Siro stadium. Lukaku won’t be seen playing at Internazionale any longer because he signed his contract at Chelsea yesterday to return to England definitively.

25% of the stadium’s capacity is allowed in in Italy at the start of the competition. If the health situation keeps on improving, the number of supporters in the stadiums will increase.

Ligue 1

Ligue 1: the only competition that already started last week. The stands are utterly occupied in France, just like in England! The competition started with a match between Monaco and Nantes, and it resulted in 1-1. Paris Saint-Germain – without Messi yet – played against Troyes and resulted in 1-2. PSG will play against Strasbourg coming Saturday evening at 9 P.M. and Lionel Messi will be welcomed openheartedly by almost 48.000 supporters at Parc des Princes.

Eredivisie

Heerenveen will travel to Deventer to play against Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie and the match will start at 8 P.M. Clubs are allowed to use 2/3rds of their stadium’s capacity until the first of September in Dutch professional football.
