Champions League 2022

We have started again! After a little over two months of radio-silence from the Champions League, the legendary hymn finally played again yesterday and the round of 16 of the Champions League started.

While Manchester United played one of their many postponed matches against Brighton in the Premier League, the first Champions League battles started in Paris and Lisbon. Paris Saint-Germain hosted the game against Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes and Manchester City visited Sporting Lisbon, where Pep Guardiola's team taught Lisbon how to play football properly: The Citizens won with 0-5 from Sporting CP. The match in Paris finished after a goal from Mbappé in the 94th minute.

Two amazing matches are on the schedule for tonight, as well: Bayern Munich – who got defeated by the just promoted Bochum – will play an away game against RB Salsburg at 9 P.M. Internazionale will play against Liverpool – a top match at San Siro.

Football trip Champions League - full stadiums

From this round of play on, not only the packed stadiums will be a striking difference: the format of the matches will also change. From this Champions League season onwards, away goals no longer count double. So, the match format will look a lot different during returns! Why was this rule introduced in the first place?

The difference between home and away matches haven't been big the last two years but since there wasn’t a twelfth person in the team anymore, the advantage of a home game had disappeared. Receiving a goal from the opponent that counts double just isn’t fair. With today's modern stadiums and easier back and forth travel, it is simply easier to score away goals today than it was when the rule was introduced.

They already talked about getting rid of the rule for a longer period of time, but the Covid era was eventually the deciding factor. Away goals didn’t count double any longer in the Champions League and the rule was also eradicated in the Europa League in 2021/22. The away goal rule had been an intrinsic part of the UEFA competitions since 1965.
