Discover the city of Ajax

The largest city of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, attracts millions of tourists every year and there's a reason for this, of course! Amsterdam is a true football city; you’ll come across football shirts of Ajax everywhere the city. But not everything is about football in Amsterdam…

Where do you have to go in Amsterdam?

If you are about to visit a football match of the Amsterdam club Ajax, then you should think about doing a tour of the Johan Cruijff ArenA, as well. The Arena, as it’s called by the Dutch, is extremely popular in Amsterdam. Not only because Ajax plays its home matches here, but also because the stadium is used for other events, like concerts. Number 1 Football Travel has created an overview of what you can do and see in Amsterdam. Explore what else you can do besides visiting a football match of Ajax. Have a great time at a match of Ajax!

The city centre

If you’re standing in the city centre of Amsterdam, you’ll find yourself in front of the Dam. The Dam is adjacent to the square where you can also find the Royal Palace, the New Church and the National Monument. The Madame Tussauds is also adjacent to the square where wax statues of famous people are exhibited. You're lucky if you love shopping. You can enter the most famous shopping street in Amsterdam – The Kalverstraat – via two sides of the square. You’ll find Rembrandtplein when you walk down the street, which is full of nice restaurants and bars. The square is very convivial at night, which makes it the perfect spot to go to after a football match to drink a beer. The Jordaan is famous for its lively nightlife, as well. This means that you can go to the Jordaan, too, after a football match of Ajax!

Museums in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is very famous for its art that was made during the Golden Age. Famous artists like Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh put the Netherlands on the map through their paintings. Rembrandt’s most famous work, De Nachtwacht (The Night Watch), can be viewed at the Rijksmuseum and you can admire Vincent’s work at the Van Gogh Museum. Several kinds of art exhibitions are displayed at the Hermitage museum and the collections change regularly, which means you can visit the museum again in the future. The Anne Frank House is absolutely worth visiting, too. You’ll get to know everything about the prosecution of Jews during the Second World War and about the Franks.

You can find more information about the museums at:

The Canal Ring

When you think about Amsterdam, you most probably instantly visualize the canals with their characteristic bridges. You’ll undoubtedly see the canals when you’re in Amsterdam, but you can shoot the most beautiful Insta pictures at the Jordaan. Walk through the streets of the Rozengracht, Keizergracht and Lindegracht and discover the heart of Amsterdam. And once you’re at the Jordaan you should definitely visit a nice bar and drink a beer with the locals. The atmosphere is always amazing at the Jordaan and the people who live here are the kindest people you'll ever come across.

The Begijnhof

You can also find the Begijnhof in the heart of Amsterdam. This oasis of peace can be found within the Singel and has an interesting history. The houses have been standing here since the 17th and 18th centuries and only women were allowed to inhabit them. Beguines haven’t been around for a while now, but it's still not allowed for men to live at the Begijnhof. Isn't that special? But don't worry; men are allowed to visit the Begijnhof and you actually should! Escape the chaos of the city for a little while and find some peace at the Begijnhof.

Beer and weed

Dutchmen love beer and this naturally has to do with the fact that the world-famous brand of Heineken was invented by a Dutchman. You can brew your own beer at the Heineken Experience, which is located in the Pijp! You’ll get to learn everything about the Dutch beer brand during the exhibition and you'll get to taste one of the delicious beers yourself at the end of the tour…

If you walk through Amsterdam, you’re likely to walk in a cannabis haze occasionally. This is not weird once you know there are around 110 coffeeshops in Amsterdam. Many tourists buy weed and other stuff in coffeeshops. You don’t necessarily have to buy something, but you might like it to sniff around and have a look.

The Red Light District

Visiting the Red Light District, known as the 'Wallen' to the locals, is something you shouldn’t miss during your trip to Amsterdam. The entire neighbourhood colours red during the evenings, which is a beautiful sight to see. It’s also fun to visit the area during the day. The streets are usually occupied by many tourists and locals, and you’ll constantly walk amongst canals and cross bridges. You’ll also come across local shops and boutiques, so you could hop in a shop from time to time. If you decide to visit the Red Light District at night, then you should probably leave the kids at home because this is for adults only.

The Concertgebouw

If you love classical music, you should visit a performance at the Concertgebouw (Concert Hall). This is one of the most visited concert halls for classical music and only the best of the best have permission to perform here. If you don’t like classical music, it’s still recommended to visit the building. The architecture of the building is stunning.

Address: Concertgebouwplein 10
An overview of the concerts can be found on: www.concertgebouw.nl

The A’DAM Tower

You can view Amsterdam from above, as you can do in almost every city, but it goes a little differently in Amsterdam. You can view the city while swinging at the A’DAM Tower. This is not the only activity you can do up here: you can also lunch or dine at the restaurant overlooking the city. A ferry will bring you to the other side of the river and you can board it at Central Station. From there, you should walk to the building that has swings on it. This is a very extraordinary experience and definitely one you'll never get the chance to do in the future!
