End of football season 2020/21

The football season has come to an end. It was an eventful year, in football, as well. Who won the national titles during this boisterous season and who won European competitions? You’ll read it in this article.

Champions League and Europa League

An odd year with peculiar matches and little audience ended with two beautiful matches: the Europa League finals between Manchester United and Villareal and the English Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea. Both finals were won by underdogs: Chelsea, number four of the Premier League, and Villareal, number seven of the Primera División. The latter won after an exciting series of penalties with 10-11 and won their first European title.

The amount of supporters in the stadiums was especially extraordinary during both European matches. Only a few thousand supporters in the stadium influence the atmosphere in the stadium already tremendously. The footballers must have enjoyed their presence a lot.

It was a weird year altogether, and most people will only look forward to the future at this point. The European Cup is almost upon us and even though this Cup will also take an entirely different shape than that we’re used to, everybody is looking forward to it.

Overview of champions 2020/21

Bundesliga

FC Bayern Munich won the national title on May 8 without having played a match because opponent RB Leipzig lost from Borussia Dortmund. It’s the record-holder’s ninth title in a row.

Primera División

The battle for the title was extremely exciting in Spain. Two more matches had to be played and FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid had a shot at winning the title. Barça was out of this race after having played against Celta de Vigo; Atlético Madrid was the one who won the title in the end.

Serie A

For the first time in nine years’ time, Juventus didn’t win the national title, but Internazionale was crowned champion of the Italian competition. Other clubs weren't able to pass Stefan de Vrij’s club anymore at the start of May with four more matches to go.

Ligue 1

With only one point in difference, Lille was the one who won the Ligue 1. Lille was the surprising victor in France, just like Italy had a surprising victor. PSG had won the national title seven times in a row before Lille won this season.

Scottish Premiership

It doesn’t stop with France and Italy: Celtic won the Scottish title nine years in a row, but rival Rangers FC won the title this time. Rangers didn’t only win the Scottish Premiership, they also wrote history by winning every single match during this year’s season. The difference in points between Celtic and Rangers was 25.

Primeira Liga

Portugal’s champion was also an unusual one this year. Sporting Lisbon won the Portuguese title after nineteen years, whereas FC Porto and Benfica usually win the title.

Eredivisie

Ajax already knew they would win their 35th national title in May, with still three more matches to go. Ten Hag’s club won with 4-0 from FC Emmen at the empty - except for the footballers and coaches - Johan Cruijff Arena.
