The change of trainers and the drawing of new footballers hasn’t obtained the expected results yet. FC Barcelona didn’t get past the quarter-finals of the Europa League last year. Neither did they win the Primera División title for the past three years. In other words: a total catastrophe. Barcelona won the Champions League five times and obtained a fifth place in the rankings because of that. Bayern and Liverpool are above Barcelona with six titles. Milan obtained seven titles and Real Madrid have set a record with 14 Champions League titles. The Catalans were thriving between 2005 and 2015:

An unprecedented accomplishment that affected the athletic and financial accomplishments of the club greatly. Only Cristiano Ronaldo scored more goals (140) in the European head tournament. Former FC Barcelona fooballers Rivaldo and Luis Suárez scored 25 goals, Neymar and Kluivert 21 and Luis Enrique 20.

Xavi Hernández – Barcelona’s trainer and former footballer – played 157 Champions League matches for Barcelona and is, therefore, the record-holder. He's followed by Messi (149), Iniesta (132), Busquets (129), Pique (126) and Puyol (120). Busquets is the only remaining player in Barcelona from the bunch. He won’t add any more matches to the ones played in the Champions League, though, since the defender departs to the US after this season.

The most recent European accomplishments of FC Barcelona are far below their desired level. They did reach the knock-out phase in 2020. The reason? Messi.

Barcelona in the Champions League 2021/22

The Catalans faced Bayern, Dynamo Kiev, and Benfica in group E. Ronald Koeman was Barcelona’s trainer at that time. His long-cherished dream came true. This did, unfortunately, not last long. Probably because of the bad results in the Champions League. In this, considerable okay, group – Barcelona only won twice. They obtained a third place in the rankings and they got knocked out of the group stage for the first time in 21 years. They lost three times with a result of 3-0. They were defeated by Bayern twice and once by Benfica.

Barcelona in the Champions League 2020/21

Barcelona was in group G with Juventus, Dynamo Kiev, and the Hongarian Ferencvárosi in the Champions League season of 2020/21. They lost only once, but they did end up on a second place. Juventus won on basis of the results obtained between the two clubs. Barcelona won with 2-0 at Camp Nou and they lost with 3-0 from Juventus. PSG was elected for the round of 16. Barcelona was completely overpowered by Mbappé during the first match. He scored three goals and the match ended in 4-1 because Messi saved them. The return ended in 1-1 and the Spanish footballers from the Spanish coastal city boarded the plane with their head held high.

Barcelona in the Champions League 2019/2020

Barcelona turned the tides during this Champions League season which led to immense consequences for the club. Barcelona got kicked out of the quarter-finals by Bayern Munich. The match ended in 2-8. This humiliation was a true burden on their shoulders, but also on the club’s and supporter’s shoulders. Barcelona had lost for the first time since 1946 with eight goals scored by the opponent. Former trainer Quique Setién got fired and Ronald Koeman was designated to be the new trainer of the club a week later. Barcelona won the quarter-finals from Napoli during this Champions League season. They even reached the first place in the group stage.

Barcelona in the Champions League 2018/2019

The draw decided that Barcelona would compete against Inter, PSV and Tottenham in the group stage. Despite of this tough group, Barcelona managed to get a first place. During the round of 16, the French Olympique Lyon was the opponent. Barca won: 5-1 and 0-0. Manchester United was the next victim; the Red Devils lost the matches; they ended in 1-0 and 3-0. Liverpool awaited them during the semi-finals. Barcelona won at Camp Nou where the match ended in 3-0. They thought they had already won, but Anfield created a miracle. The Reds won with a result of 4-0 and Barcelona was, once again, kicked out.

Barcelona in the Champions League 2017/18

Barcelona was placed in group D with Juventus, Sporting Lissabon and the Greek Olympiakos. Juventus defeated Barcelona only a year prior to this season, so this was the ultimate moment for revenge. The Catalans seized the moment and they won with a result of 3-0. All the other clubs appeared to be incompetent of winning from Messi and co. Chelsea got defeated twice during the round of 16. The Blues managed to end in 1-1 during a home game, but they lost from Barca with result of 3-0. It didn’t end well during the quarter-finals against AS Roma. They first lost a game in 3-0 from AS Roma in Italy, but they won in Barcelona with a game that ended in 4-1. Ernesto Valverde’s team was kicked out because of AS Roma’s last goal.

FC Barcelona in the Europa League 2022/23

Barcelona is given another chance at winning the Europa League title. Eintracht Frankfurt appeared to be a strong component in the quarter-finals last year. They don't expect Barcelona to win the Europa League title this year. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal is the favourite club at the moment. They’re in the top tier of the Premier League and their results are good.
