It was raining records during Le Classique between Marseille and PSG

Paris Saint-Germain won impressively from their direct opponent and arch-rival Olympique de Marseille last weekend. Due to the 3-0 victory, PSG now has eight more points than runner-up Marseille. Besides the amazing victory, the evening got even better because of two astonishing records set by goal scorers Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

After Ronaldo it’s Messi’s turn to score 700 goals at a club

After Mbappé scored the second goal of the match, Lionel Messi scored his 28th goal at PSG and his 700th at a professional football club. The only one who scored more goals is Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese, who currently plays at Al-Nassr, scored 709 goals at an acknowledged football club. The small Argentine scored the most goals at FC Barcelona (672). This makes him the all-time recordholder for most scored goals at one club.

Right now, the only two players who come close to the two football magician’s records are Robert Lewandowski and Luis Suárez. The two top strikers both passed the magical border of 500 goals. Chances are that Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé will also break the record of 700 goals.

Kylian Mbappé top scorer of all time at PSG

The only 24-year-old Kylian Mbappé scored 200 goals at PSG and therefore makes him top scorer of all time at the club. The Frenchman reached this milestone by scoring twice during Le Classique against Marseille last Sunday. He shares this record with Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan did this in 301 matches, while Mbappé broke the record in only 246 matches. The Frenchman started his professional football career at AS Monaco in which he scored 25 times in 60 matches. The twenty-something scored 27 times in 66 matches for the national team of France.

New record within reach

Despite the freshly broken records, the next milestone is already within reach. Messi and co can crown themselves most successful club of France this season. So far, Saint-Etienne, PSG and Marseille all won ten national titles. Looking at the budget and selection of PSG, this milestone is easily reached.

In addition, the opponents are far from reaching that milestone. Olympique de Marseille celebrated their last national championship in 2010 and Saint-Etienne in 1981. PSG won the title every season since 2013 except for the one in 2021. Lille added a sixth national championship to their name that year.
