Real Madrid wins Supercopa de España after penalty shootout

Last week, on Wednesday 8 January, the first semifinal of the Supercopa de España was played between Real Madrid and Valencia, which Valencia lost 1-3. A day later, the other semifinal was played between FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. After several disappointing performances from FC Barcelona in 2019, the team under head coach Ernesto Valverde once again suffered a loss. Last Monday, Valverde was fired and replaced by Betis-coach Quique Setién.

Atlético Madrid eventually won the match 2-3, after the VAR denied FC Barcelona two goals.

Since both clubs from Madrid had won their semifinals, last Sunday the Supercopa de España turned out to be an extra El Derbi Madrileño. And it was a long one; after 120 minutes of goalless football, the match had to be decided through a penalty shootout. Los Blancos didn’t miss; Atlético missed twice.

It was the 11th time for Real Madrid to win the Spanish Supercopa.
