Season 2021/22 is over

Probably everybody watched the spectacular denouement of the Premier League last night: it was super exciting until the last minute and both Manchester City and Liverpool had a great shot at winning the title. How did the other European competitions go and what clubs promoted and relegated this season? You’ll read it all in this extended blog.

Bundesliga

Bayern Munich was the first one to crown themselves champions in Europe. On Saturday night, April 23, Der Rekordmeister won the Bundesliga title for the tenth time in a row. Borussia Dortmund missed, once again, a few points in order to win the title.

Greuther Fürth promoted to the Bundesliga in the season of 2020/21, and they gave their everything in order to stay in the competition, but they weren’t able to keep up with the highest competition of Germany. This was the first club to relegate. Arminia Bielefeld accompanied them and relegated to 2. Bundesliga.

2. Bundesliga

Feast in Gelsenkirchen!

On the seventh of May it was feast in Gelsenkirchen: after one year of absence, Schalke 04 is the first club to return to the Bundesliga, where the beautiful club was missed greatly last season. Werder Bremen was the second club to return to the Bundesliga after only one year of absence. On the last matchday, Die Werderaner won three points and they obtained a second place in the 2. Bundesliga. Two amazing clubs that are welcomed whole-heartedly in the German Bundesliga!

Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain played a draw against RC Lens on Saturday night, April 23, and they won the French national title. The championship didn’t come as a surprise, with players like Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. The club knew a long time that they’d win the competition, since the difference in points between the runner-up, Olympique Marseille, was 16. The battle for number 2 in the rankings of Ligue 1, which would also qualify for the Champions League, was a lot more exciting: Olympique Marseille and Monaco had been very close for weeks. Both clubs had obtained 68 points and they only had one more match to play. Monaco’s goal balance was 25 and Marseille’s 21. Monaco didn’t manage to win their last game: they played 2-2 against Lens. Marseille, on the other hand, won exuberantly during a home game from Strasbourg with 4-0 and qualified themselves for the group stage in the Champions League.

Bordeaux and Metz relegate from Ligue 1.

La Liga

The clubs in Spain didn’t really battle for the title. Real Madrid won during a home game from Espanyol with a compelling 4-0. It wasn’t possible anymore to pass Real, so they are celebrating their 35th national championship now! Despite of them having started off poorly, and after a volatile season, FC Barcelona ended up on a second place with a total of 73 points, followed by Atlético Madrid (71) and Sevilla (70).

Getafe, Cádiz, Mallorca, Granada, Levante and Alavés all tried to fight off relegation the last couple of weeks. The last three clubs had to say goodbye to the Primera División.

Scottish Premiership

The Rangers, lead by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, conquered a spot in the finals of the Europa League on Thursday the fifth of May. A great accomplishment of the club from Glasgow, which won the European cup last in 1972.

The battle for the national title was between Celtic and Rangers this season, as is almost always the case in the Scottish Premiership. The Rangers didn’t manage to win the title this year: Celtic were crowned champions on the seventh of May after winning from Hearts with 4-1.

Primera Liga

FC Porto can call themselves champions of Portugal this season. The club won during an away game from Benfica with 0-1 on the seventh of May. This was the 30th time that FC Porto won the Primeira Liga title. Sporting CP obtained a second place and qualified themselves for the Champions League.

Tondela and Belenenses (B-SAD) relegate from the Primeira Liga.

Serie A

The Serie A was super exciting until the very last minute of the concluding match and the results are magnificent: AC Milan won the championship after eleven years. The legendary Zlatan Ibrahimovic won his twelfth championship because of this. Internazionale ended up on a second place with 84 points; only two points from AC Milan, but they also qualified for the Champions League, just like Napoli and Juventus.

Cagliari, Genoa and Venezia relegated from the Serie A.

Premier League

The battle for the Premier League title was more exciting than ever during this season: Manchester and Liverpool were both very close at winning the title. On Saturday, May 7, Liverpool wasted precious points during a home game against Tottenham Hotspur. The match ended in a poor 1-1. Manchester City won one day later slightly more compellingly from Newcastle with 5-0, which caused them to win four points. The battle was still going on with only two more matches to play. Manchester City unexpectedly wasted two precious points, as well, on May 15: West Ham United dominated the game with 2-0 at first, an exciting match which resulted in 2-2.

There was one more match on the programme, and tensions ran high yesterday in the Premier League. The Anfield Stadium would've exploded, if Manchester City once again fell behind with 2-0 during a home game against Aston Villa. But Liverpool also needed to give their everything. The 1-1 against Wolverhampton would not suffice for Liverpool to win the title… A lot of goals were scored by both Manchester and Liverpool, and even though Liverpool won with 3-1, City won with 3-2. Guardiola’s club wins their fourth Premier League title within six years’ time. An amazing accomplishment.

The relegation battle

The relegation battle was equally exciting. Norwich City and Watford FC were the first to leave the Premier League, but who would be the third club? The points were so close together. Leeds, Burnley and Everton gave their everything until the last minute, but Burnley was the one who couldn’t keep up.
