The most impressive winter transfers 2022/23

The winter transfer window closed on January 31, which means that transferred football players have been playing at their new club a little longer than two weeks now. What happened in the last transfer window and did clubs spend shocking amounts of money on football players? You can read it all in this blog about the most impressive winter transfers 2022/23.

Sensational transfers

Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t feel particularly comfortable at Manchester United and he wasn’t discreet to hide his dislike. Right after the World Cup in Qatar, it was announced that he would leave to Saudi Arabia for 200 million euros. Liverpool bought the Dutchman Cody Gakpo for 50 million euros and they made Gakpo's dream come true at last. And then we have Neymar; he wanted to leave Paris Saint-Germain so badly but no transfer for him this time. He has to sit the season out in France. Let’s take a look at what else has happened this winter transfer window.

Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United

Everton fans were pretty shocked when they heard Anthony Gordon would leave Everton, and they’re not happy that he’ll play at Newcastle United in the future. The transfer was completed only three days before the transfer window closed. Anthony Gordon didn’t show up for trainings three days before the transfer was official. Teammates already found it suspicious and Gordon left Everton after six years, even though Gordon signed for another five years at Everton in the 2020/21 season. Newcastle United bought Gordon for around 45 million euros.

Mudryk to Chelsea

Chelsea had been keeping an eye on Mudryk for quite some time but it finally happened in this transfer window: Chelsea bought Mudryk for 100 million euros from the Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. Rumour had it that Mudryk would be taken over by Arsenal, but Shakhtar did not agree with the offer of 40 million euros. They demanded at least 100 million and Arsenal wasn’t prepared to pay this amount. That’s where Chelsea came in with the financial resources. The Ukrainian got noticed during this Champions League season because he scored three goals in six games and he also made two assists. Mudryk is the second most expensive purchase of Chelsea ever and his contact lasts until around 2030.

The most expensive transfer ever: Enzo Fernández to Chelsea

This is a great moment to mention that Chelsea made the most expensive purchase in the Premier League ever, since we’re talking about high amounts of money. After weeks of considering options, the incredibly rich owner of Chelsea decided to buy the great football player Enzo Fernández for no less than 121 million euros! The footballer played at the Portuguese SL Benfica previously, and he has to show he’s worth the money now at the London Chelsea. Benfica bought the footballer for ‘only’ 10 million euros from the Argentine River Plate in the summer transfer window of 2022/23. Professionals saw quite quickly that an amazing career awaited the Argentine. This came a little faster than expected for Benfica, but they were, of course, very glad with the amount of money they earned with Fernández’s departure. River Plate also profits from the great sum; they managed to negotiate a 25% sell-through rate for Fernández’s departure.

Noni Madueke transfer

Weeks passed until Noni Madueke knew for certain whether he would leave PSV, but the transfer went super-fast all of a sudden. Madueke was welcomed by Chelsea. Chelsea is incredibly happy with the purchase and calls Madueke ‘one of the most exhilarating young talents of Europe’. Madueke will definitely face his former teammate Gakpo in the Premier League. The Dutch club has to fill a void now two top football players left the team this transfer window. Madueke and Gakpo’s substitutes are Fabio Silva and Thorgan hazard, who is temporarily rented.

João Félix to Chelsea, too?

João Félix’s departure is not definitive yet, but he will play for Chelsea the coming six months. The club rents him from Atlético Madrid for half a year. You might wonder why Chelsea bought so many footballers this winter transfer window and why they need so many top football players. The reason for this is that they are momentarily ranked on a disappointing tenth place in the Premier League. Félix is happy to be playing at one of the greatest clubs in the world these next six months and he would love to help Chelsea achieve their goal. It is quite obvious that Chelsea was wholesale customer during the winter transfer window of 2022/23. But will they succeed in finishing in the top five of the Premier League rankings? Will the transfers pay off during the second half of the season? There’s only one way to find out…
